Spain

Spain offers a perfect blend of rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, with iconic cities like Barcelona and Madrid to explore. Its delicious cuisine, beautiful beaches, and lively festivals make it an unforgettable destination for any traveler.

Language

The most common language is Spanish, also referred to as Castellano. There are other regional languages in the Basque Country and Galicia, however Spanish is widely used across the country.
Some common local phrases are:
“Vale” – Okay
“Caña”- Small glass of tap beer
“Chato” – Small glass of wine

Currency

The currency used is the Euro (EUR). Most restaurants, shops and cafes accept credit card and apple pay, however having some cash is a good idea. When using a credit card, selecting EUR as the currency ensures the best exchange rate.

Weather

Spain has diverse weather: hot summers and mild winters in the south, cooler and wetter conditions in the north, and a Mediterranean climate along the coast. The best time to visit Spain is spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is mild, and crowds are smaller compared to the summer. If you’re looking for warm weather and beach time, summer (June to August) is ideal.

My experience in Spain

Spain holds a special place in my heart. My father is from Galicia, which is why it felt like home the moment I visited in 2000 as a study abroad student. I’ve developed a deep connection to the culture and people, and I’ve returned many times since.

Each trip to Spain has been unique and unforgettable—whether I was there with my parents, on girls’ trips with friends, with my children, or alone with my husband, every experience has been special in its own way.

There’s no shortage of things to do in Spain. The country is known for its lively late-night atmosphere, passionate flamenco, rich history, world-class wine, and exceptional food. Whether you’re exploring a bustling city, a charming village, or a stunning beach, Spain offers something incredible at every turn.

  • Transportation Tip – In my experience, travel by train is ideal in Spain to connect big cities like Madrid, Barcelona or Sevilla. Trains are very fast and efficient. If you want to explore more rural villages or coastal towns, renting a car is ideal. It offers so much flexibility, especially when traveling with kids. We recommend Discover Cars for a smooth and easy experience.
